Carbon Trading - FFI Trinidad, 4-5 June 2007

Carbon markets and CDM projects

Many thanks to all who attended First Forum International’s ground breaking conference, Carbon Trading – Opportunities in the Caribbean, held at the Hilton on 4-5 June 2007.

Our international panel of experts spent two days with delegates, exploring opportunities in the Caribbean for funding carbon reducing projects under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change. The panel was led by Mr Kai-Uwe Barani Schmidt of the UNFCCC, one of the developers of the Clean Development Mechanism and a world renowned speaker on this topic. The level of knowledge displayed by the panel was evident, as was the total engagement of the delegates.

‘Kishan Kumarsingh, Environmental Programme Officer with the EMA in Trinidad and Tobago, said: ‘This conference has provided a long-needed forum for clarifying issues related to carbon trading, particularly the CDM and the opportunities that can be pursued by the local industry sector. I congratulate the organizers for this initiation.’
The conference listens.

Delegates comments included:

‘All areas were interesting and informative - especially the financing aspect and the presentations that dealt with the Caribbean in particular.’
‘Excellent and knowledgeable presenters.’
‘I learned something from all sessions.’
‘The facilitators were very professional, the accommodation was good, the food and beverages were excellent.’

Trinidad and Tobago, it seems, is poised to embark on a new journey into Clean Development Mechanism projects and carbon markets. To both those who joined us on 4-5 June and those who missed this first opportunity, we are now planning a new series of events based on CDM and emissions trading. Watch this space!

‘This conference has been a very encouraging experience, with the private and public sectors starting to explore the opportunities for the Caribbean region provided by carbon markets.’ Kai-Uwe Barani Schmidt, Secretary to the CDM Executive Board, UNFCCC
